 Renewed Appeal for Irish Relatives

By Cliona Connolly
Monaghan Post

A FAMILY with roots in Clones has issued an appeal for assistance in their quest to find out if they have any relatives living in Clones, Co Monaghan. From his research into his family tree, John Sloey can trace his ancestors to Clones in the early 1800s. Read on to see if you are related to John or if you can help him find his relations!
“My Great Great Great Grandfather John Slowey was born in Clones, Monaghan around 1809-11 to his parents James Slowey and Bridget McCabe. He then married Ann Cunningham in 1849 in Clones by what I can make out was a Priest called Fr McGinnis or Fr McGuiness.
”They went on to have my Great Great Grandad, James, in 1845 and moved to Glasgow shortly after he was born. James married Mary Ann Daily or McCartney, who was previously married, at St Johns RC Church 28 February in 1870 by a Priest called the Fr Chisolm. James and Mary Ann went on to have four children. These were my Great Grandfather James, Mary Ann, Peter and John.”
Unfortunately, John’s Great Grandfather James succumbed to Tuberculosis and died aged only forty-three on 29 July 1888 died on the 29th July 1888. That is where John’s family tree ends.
John believes his ancestors may have held the address of Coraghy, Clones as this is given on the Griffiths Valuation – the first survey conducted by Irelands Valuation office of property ownership in Ireland from 1848 to 1864 and is often related to as a census substitute.
“I would appreciate any help or contact from any Sloweys or Sloeys who think might
be related to us and have old photos lying around - I know this is a long shot but I
live in hope.” John comes from a large family of six brothers and four sisters “They all agree it’s very exciting to be descended from a family that comes from the home of the Greatest Irish Boxer of all time Barry McGuigan! I also recently bought a copy of the movie The Butcher Boy which as you will know was filmed in Clones and to see Slowey’s shop in the background was amazing.”

Please contact John directly by emailing pancho42@hotmail.com if you can help.
