The first year 1 Aileach class in Largy College, Clones, along with their religion teacher Miss Smith came up with a novel way of raising much needed funds for Trocaire. They participated in a sponsored silence on Tuesday 27th April, in which they successfully raised an outstanding amount of €2030 in aid of Trocaire. They were so successful that some of their colleagues requested this novel idea be a weekly event!
A number of students also participated in the 24 hour fast on the 10th March. The students who participated were: Rachel Nulty, Caroline Mullaney, Deirdre Mc Mahon, Laura Mullaney, Nakita Cassidy, Aine Moore, Rachel O Harte, Rachel Aspell, Ethan Swetak, Ashleigh Mc Donnell, Collette Mc Donagh, Elvina Masterson and Shauna Smith.
‘Clean up Clones’ – a great success
• Some of the children and adults who participated in the recent Clones clean up.
• 5th Class pupils from Scoil Chroí Ró Naofa pictured at the launch of the Super Valu Tidy Towns Initiative which took place in Temple Bar, Dublin.
On Wednesday evening 25th April the Green-schools committee organised the Annual Spring Clean up in Clones.
Over 180 people took part and it was a wonderful success with the streets litter free in just over an hour. Staff and parents from the school supervised in each area, the committee members took names and handed out bags, gloves and litter-pickers.
Clones U.D.C. gave us a lot of help and they arranged for the bags to be picked up by council workers and put into skips in the council yard. The litter was separated into aluminium cans, plastic bottles and general waste – Clones looked a lot cleaner on Wednesday night! It would be great if we could keep it this way all the time.
We would also like to thank Clones Community Forum, Iónad na nÓg and Clones Erne East for their help.
All this work followed a visit to Dublin by 5th Class pupils for the launch of the Super-valu Tidy Towns Initiative. Scoil Chroí Ró Naofa got the invitation to attend this launch in light of their success in becoming the first school in Ireland to be awarded the top prize in the ‘Super-valu Primary Schools’ Tidy Towns Initiative’ in 2006.
The children had a great day in the Ark cultural centre in Temple Bar where they were interviewed by R.T.E.’s Nationwide programme, journalists from national newspapers and also on the podium by Minister of State for the Environment Batt O’Keefe. Everyone enjoyed the carnival atmosphere with jugglers, face painting and balloon modelling topped off by a wonderful afternoon pop concert with Ronan Johnston and his band from ‘You’re a Star on R.T.E.
